Republic Airlines had assembled a large collection of Douglas DC-9 aircraft, and after their merger, Northwest continued to acquire copies of the durable and dependable type, forming by far the largest fleet of DC-9s to have ever flown for one company. Careful maintenance and a late 1990s program to improve their performance while installing brand-new interiors kept these airplanes flying well into the 2000s with style and comfort. Some DC-9-50s originally delivered to North Central in the mid-1970s even made it into the Delta fleet after that merger - a testament to their versatility and good economics.
Four different paint schemes are represented on these stickers: the immediate post-merger style, where a decal with the Northwest name was applied over the Republic striping; the classic "thermometer" 1970s style blue stripe; the unifying 1990s "Bowling Shoe"; and the final "Silver Bullet" scheme. There were several additional sub-variant liveries flying around in the late 80s-mid 90s, but these were the most common.
